US President Donald Trump on Sunday launched a barrage of tweets berating former FBI director James Comey, who is set to begin a publicity tour to promote a book that describes his dealings with the president.
Trump lambasts Comey as "a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!"
He also calls Comey "slippery" and again described him as a "slime ball." He says he never asked him for personal loyalty, as Comey asserts in his book A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership.
The book, which is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, was the subject of five of eight tweets sent by the president on Sunday morning.
The tweets came hours ahead of Comey's first sit-down televised interview at 10 pm on Sunday.
Trump already attacked Comey on Friday, calling him "a proven LEAKER & LIAR" who should be prosecuted for leaking classified information in a tweet.
Excerpts of the book released on Thursday paint a devastating portrait of the president as a congenital liar and an unethical leader.
Trump tweeted on Sunday that he "hardly even knew this guy" and said his assertion that he demanded loyalty was "another of his many lies."
He says Comey's book fails to answer questions about the FBI's 2016 investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.
Trump fired Comey in May. Immediately afterwards the Justice Department launched the special counsel probe of Russian election meddling.
