Katara – the Cultural Village launched on Sunday the ‘Dazzling Egg’ exhibition by artist Um Abdullah al-Khulaifi at the Katara Art Studios, building 19.
The exhibition, which features uniquely-designed eggs runs until April 30.
It portrays the artist’s loyalty to her country in the face on an unjust blockade.
“Due to the blockade, I have a strong feeling that I need to express my loyalty to my country, especially when I saw many creative contributions of other artists,” al-Khulaifi said at the launch, which was attended by Katara deputy general manager Ahmed Abdulrahman al-Sayed and representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
“I decided to transfer the image of Tamim Al Majd by artist Ahmed al-Maadheed on ostrich eggs and other works until I accomplished a large number of designs,” she added. “Then, I found the opportunity to present my artworks at Katara.”
The artist noted that she started this craft in 1990 and her first exhibition was held in 1993 at the Sheraton Doha Hotel.
“This exhibition has achieved a great success but also encountered difficulties, such as providing the necessary materials from overseas that prevented me to practice this art for many years despite the attempts of my relatives to encourage me,” she pointed out.
Al-Khulaifi added that it needs a high qualification and precision to do an artwork on eggs so as not to fracture them.
“I utilise in my works on eggs of ostrich, emu, goose, and turkey. The emu egg has a hard shell that require more effort and time to complete an artwork on it,” she said.
The artist also revealed that she became interested in such art when she was 10 years old after watching English Channel 2, showing a foreign artist painting on eggs.
“Since then I tried to imitate that artist and practice this art with much love and creativity,” al-Khulaifi said.
