The school’s team secured 56 points in the overall tally in the sports event in which more than 2,000 athletes from CBSE affiliated schools in India and the Gulf took part.
The MES made history when the school team dominated the competition in the all India CBSE Inter-school Athletic Meet, making it the first time a school from outside India won the Overall Championship in the CBSE Meet.
Individual medal winners include: Mohamed Faaz - Gold, Boys’ Under-16 High Jump and Silver, Triple Jump; Reyma Alen Thomas - Gold, Girls’ Under-19 Long Jump, and Gold, Triple Jump; Mohamed Ashiq Kareem - Silver, Boys’ Under-16 200m race.
The school also secured a Gold in Under-16 4x100m Relay Boys (Adil Ismail, Job Johnson, Mohamed Faaz, Shijo N Mathew and Mohamed Ashiq) and Under-16 4x400m Relay Boys.
The MES also won a bronze in Under-19 4x400m Relay (Jeswin Thomas, Rahul Venugopal, Mohamed Hashir, Thoufeeq Ali, Adil Mohd Salim).
The team comprised Satwik Sani, Farhan Ottakath, Angel Treesa Jame and Deborah Elizabeth Sam.
The MES Indian School was the champion at the CBSE Qatar Cluster Athletic Meet held in December 2011, where the youngsters posed a daunting challenge for their fellow competitors.
“The intensive physical training and support given to our athletes by the school was a motivation for the students which was complemented by their determination and dogged perseverance. Finally they achieved what they strove for,” said the coaches of the team, Akbar Ali K T, Steeson Mathew and Unnimaya.
The team was given an overwhelming welcome at the Doha International Airport by Ahmed Ishaam, sports director of the school; principal A P Sasidharan; vice principals Aleyamma Mathew and Hameeda Kader, teachers of the Physical Education Department, parents, relatives and friends.
“The large pool of sporting talent in MES is our unique strength. An in-depth, scientific approach to training by the Physical Education Department has yielded the best results for us at the CBSE Athletic Meet,” said A Shamsuddeen, general secretary of the school governing body.
“We are confident that MES athletes have the potential to conquer peaks of achievements in all spheres in future as well,” said Ishaam, the sports director.
“It is not only in academics that MES students excel; in all the co-curricular/extra curricular fields too they make their mark. We will not rest, but will strive to achieve even higher results in the international sports meets in the near future,” the principal said.
