Members of the Vienna Boys Choir are set to perform in Doha for the first time this weekend
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will play alongside the Vienna Boys Choir this weekend, as the Opera House at Katara brings together the two ensembles for a series special New Year’s concerts from January 21-23.
The concerts will be directed by Gerald Wirth and feature works by Johann Strauss, Verdi, Bizet, Schumann, Suppe, Joseph Strauss, Mascagni and Mozart, with tickets available from Virgin Megastores.
The choir is well known as one of the best in the world and has been singing at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor since the early 15th century, with the choir separated into four touring groups named after the composers, Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert.
Director of cultural affairs, Emad Sultan said: “We are proud to host the Vienna Boys Choir and look forward to the result of the collaboration with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Katara continues to bring world renowned artistes and musicians, contributing to our overall vision to educate and entertain while building cultural bridges.” The choir has been involved in projects from all over the world, including ‘Silk Road,’ featuring music from Uzbekistan, China, Pakistan, Iran and Tajikistan.
The project inspired director Curt Faudon to film a documentary about the choir’s life in Vienna as well as their experiences of touring, featuring a soundtrack of the boys singing in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Japanese, Latin, Marathi, Maori, Urdu, and many other languages. The show at Katara will also feature Johann Strauss’ ‘Tritach Tratsch’ (Chit Chat) and Josef Strauss’ ‘Feuerfest’ (Fireproof).
A second film about the choir, Bridging the Gap is scheduled to be released this year.
