A Doha Criminal Court has sentenced a transit passenger to five years in jail and imposed a fine of QR200,000 on him for attempting to smuggle 133 capsules of cocaine.

According to local Arabic daily Al Sharq, Customs officers at Hamad International Airport (HIA) grew suspicious on seeing the body language of the defendant, who was coming from his home country and on his way to an African nation via Doha.

Accordingly, the traveller was taken to the security department concerned at HIA for a full search. A scan revealed that he had swallowed the cocaine capsules in order to smuggle them to his destination.

During interrogation, he said another person had paid him in his home country to smuggle the drugs.

Eventually, the court convicted him and also ordered his deportation upon serving the sentence.
