Qatar has reiterated that the continuation of the unjust blockade imposed almost two years ago constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, human rights, and the United Nations Charter and undermines international co-operation and the international multilateral system.
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani, warned that the blockade would promote the policy of bullying in international relations, and replace the rule of law with the law of jungle.
She was speaking at the High-level Meeting of the UN General Assembly on the occasion of the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
Sheikha Alya said the growing challenges of the international community were a growing concern for all, as crises and breaches of international law threatened peace and stability in the world.
She noted the achievements of multilateral international action since the establishment of the UN system, most recently the climate change agreement, the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 and the global compact for migration.
The Qatari diplomat added that the principle of multilateralism, on which the UN had been built, now faced serious challenges, which almost undermine the gains made and the international efforts to promote peace, development and human rights.
She stressed the major challenges facing the Arab region as a result of the continuation of conflicts and the eruption of crises.
The ambassador pointed out that multilateralism and diplomacy are clearly reflected in the role played by the UN as the main forum for international co-operation and burden-sharing in the face of challenges in accordance with the provisions of the UN Charter, calling on member states to develop their capacities to enhance the role of the organisation to enable them to achieve their goals.
She also expressed the support of Qatar to make the UN closer to people as a “house of pluralism”.
Her Excellency pointed out that the role and effectiveness of international institutions, in particular the UN, is closely linked to its ability to translate the UN Charter into action, to end violations of international law and human rights, to respond to people’s concerns and to achieve the common aspirations of the international community for peace, security, development and human rights.
