*Second plane to reach Sudan capital on Tuesday

Qatar's first plane carrying 60 tonnes of relief materials to flood-affected people arrived in Khartoum on Saturday as part of an airlift aimed at easing the sufferings of thousands of Sudanese families in several areas.

Upon the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the first relief flight to support Sudan flood victims took off from Doha Saturday morning. The plane belongs to the Amiri Air Force of the Ministry of Defence.

The aid is part of an emergency grant allocated by the Qatar Fund for Development worth $5mn. A Qatari Search and Rescue team of Lekhwiya has also been dispatched to assist in relief operations.

The Standing Committee for Rescue and Relief Works and Humanitarian Aids for Afflicted Areas in Brotherly and Friendly Countries headed by Lekhwiya was responsible for preparing the relief materials and co-ordinating with the authorities concerned to deliver them to the affected areas.

Ambassador of Qatar to Sudan Abdulrahman bin Ali al-Kubaisi considered this assistance a sincere expression of the interaction of Qatar's leadership, government and people with what happened to brotherly Sudan due to the floods and rains that have hit the country recently.

The ambassador said that the Qatari aid includes foodstuffs as well as support for the health and environmental sanitation sectors, pointing out that the second plane will arrive in Khartoum on Tuesday.

He noted the strong relations between Qatar and Sudan, adding that Qatar is keen to respond promptly to all urgent humanitarian needs all over the world based on its vital role in this regard.

Al-Kubaisi explained that Qatar Charity and Qatar Red Crescent Society earlier sent relief convoys to several affected areas in brotherly Sudan in cooperation and coordination with the competent Sudanese authorities.
