Qatar expressed Wednesday its concern over the persistence of the phenomenon of enforced disappearance in the Gulf crisis, during which Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt imposed an unfair blockade on Qatar, its citizens and residents.
Qatar praised the efforts of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to clarify the fate and whereabouts of a number of Qatari nationals who had been subjected to unjustified enforced disappearance.
This came during Qatar's interactive dialogue with the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances as part of the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council, delivered by Qatar’s Permanent Representative in Geneva ambassador Ali Khalfan al-Mansouri.
Ambassador al-Mansouri said that despite the release of a number of Qatari nationals by the Saudi authorities after being subjected to enforced disappearance, they are still holding Qatari student Abdulaziz Saeed Abdullah since July 2018, who forcibly disappeared and is currently suffering from a significant deterioration in his health as a result of torture and deliberate medical negligence.
The ambassador expressed Qatar's condemnation and deep concern about the enforced disappearance of Qatari national Ali Nasser Ali Jarallah, aged 70 and his 17-year-old son Abdulhadi, who entered Saudi Arabia on August 15, under a family permit issued by the Saudi authorities. He said that they forcibly disappeared, and arrested by the Saudi authorities and hid in an unknown location.
In this regard, al-Mansouri added that Qatar is holding Saudi Arabia fully responsible for the life and safety of the mentioned Qatari nationals, to ensure that they have all their rights guaranteed by relevant international conventions and treaties, and called on the Saudi authorities to disclose their fate and release them immediately.
In conclusion, the ambassador stressed the importance of full cooperation with the Working Group and the provision of all information on enforced disappearances, taking all measures to combat enforced disappearances, holding those responsible accountable and compensating victims.
