A total of 183 tonnes of local vegetables were sold in August under the Premium Qatari Vegetables and Qatar Farms programmes, the official Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.
Local farm products are sold at various malls and hypermarkets in Qatar such as LuLu Hypermarket, Carrefour, Al Meera and Family Food Centre under the two initiatives.
Such programmes aim to improve the local marketing of Qatari vegetables, increase demand and minimise production losses.
They also seek to increase Qatari farm income, encouraging increased investment in agriculture and the availability of local vegetable varieties at consumer complexes throughout the year.
The local product marketing programmes are supervised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment in co-operation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The initiatives were undertaken to provide Qatari farmers with the opportunity to sell high-quality local vegetables at affordable prices to consumers without any intermediary, and without paying any commissions.
Through these marketing programmes, local vegetable products have proven to be competitive vis-a-vis imported farm produce in the Qatari market, QNA adds.
