Four government entities in Qatar have partnered to launch a unique project that would involve local artists in transforming Doha into a piece of stunning artwork.
Titled “Development of Central Doha Area”, the project is being spearheaded by the Technical Committee for Artworks, which is comprised of Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Qatar Museums (QM), Ministry of Culture and Sports (MoCS), and Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME).
The committee will select groups of sculptures and artworks that will be positioned in different locations in central Doha dedicated for artists’ works: the Hotels Park, Abdullah bin Thani Street Gate, Al Meena Street Intersection, Al Qubaib Mosque Plaza, and Grand Hamad Street.
Engr. Mohamed Arqoub al-Khaldi, chairman of the Supervising Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places, said the Technical Committee for Artworks aims “to strengthen the cultural, artistic and technical co-operation in the field of art and 3D Models between the concerned entities of the country.”
“This could be achieved through utilising artistic creativity and innovative production of talents of people in Qatar, to enrich cities and roads with distinctive aesthetic outlook, highlighting the Qatari identity in the field of art and sculpture, and enhancing the artistic culture of the people in Qatar,” he added.
The committee organised the “Artworks for Beautification of Doha” conference at the National Museum of Qatar on Tuesday, giving local artists (amateurs and professionals) the opportunity to take part in the project and submit their proposals in line with the proposed sites for the artworks.
The conference was attended by Al-Khaldi; QM’s acting CEO Ahmed al-Namlah; Eng. Fatima al-Zaraa, member of the Supervising Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar; Salman Ibrahim al-Malik, director of the Visual Art Centre at the Ministry of Culture and Sports; Eng Abdulrahman al-Ishaq, head of Public Arts Section at QM; Eng. Mubarak al-Nuaimi, engineering advisor at MME; Eng Sara Kafood, member of the Supervising Committee of Beatification of Roads and Public Places; and several local artists, including Fahd al-Maadid, Ahmad al-Maadid, and Ali al-Kuwari, among other guests.
In her presentation, al-Zaraa cited the significant role of local artists in making Doha a beautiful city through artworks that reflects the country’s rich culture and heritage.
Artists, both Qatari and residents over 21 years old, can participate in several locations of this project, according to the Technical Committee for Artworks.
“We value this trend of co-operation to spread culture and art across the community and we are excited about this project. We at QM have tremendous experience and a legacy of general art projects as it is one of our focus areas,” al-Namlah said.
“The general art of QM is exhibited in the public places of Qatar including the Hamad International Airport, Salwa Road Tunnels, other main roads and public places,” he noted. “We are committed to harnessing our potential, to put our artistic and operational expertise to serve this project in co-operation with our partners.”
“This co-operation will result in the transformation of the Doha Central area and Doha city in general into a stunning and eye-catching painting,” al-Namlah stressed.
The project, which will cover large areas of the city such as the Doha Corniche, aims to add a distinctive aesthetic character to the roads and public places in the country, matching its nature and history.
Part of this initiative will also see easy access to roads and streets linked with pedestrian and cycle paths, making central Doha lively.
