The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) opened on Saturday the first underpass at the Mesaimeer Interchange to provide a free exit for the E-Ring Road towards Rawdat Al Khail Street.
The 220-metre long underpass is the first of the nine underpasses at the interchange.
Project engineer Hassan al-Ghanim said the interchange will be opened in the second quarter of 2020, six months ahead of the schedule as 65% of the works have been completed.
“The underpass connects traffic flow from E Ring road towards Rawdhat Al Khail Street. Road users coming from Al Thumama and Old Airport have now direct access to Rawdat Al Khail Street without the need to use the old diversion”, the Ashghal officer said.
The three-level interchange is the first of its kind in Qatar and it contains two main bridges that connect Rawdat Al Khail Street and the Industrial Area Road in both directions. Besides, it connects E Ring Road with the southern part of Doha Expressway in one direction. The project is 6.1km long and when complete can handle about 20,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Designed in a distinctive pentagonal shape, the interchange connects five main roads - E Ring Road, Doha Expressway, Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor, Industrial Area Road and Rawdat Alkhail Street.
It is located in a vital area that has many facilities including Al Thumama Stadium and it has three pedestrian bridges that provide easy access to the stadium. The interchange also serves many important educational, health and commercial facilities. It will include a sophisticated intelligent transport system where surveillance cameras and a vehicle number monitor will be installed, as well as an emergency traffic system.
The Mesaimeer Interchange integrates with Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor through its connection to Al Wattiyyat Interchange which is a strategic link between the southern part of Doha Expressway with Doha’s main highway to provide a free flow of traffic between the north and south of the city.
Engineer Yousef Abdulrahman al-Emadi, Ashghal Project Affairs Director, Bader Darwish, Highway Project Department manager, Lieutenant Engineer Saoud Abdullah al- Hamad from Traffic Engineering and Safety Department and a number of engineers from Ashghal and the contracting company paid a visit to review the developments of the construction underway at the interchange.
