Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron expressed during a telephone conversation their concern over a possible regional escalation following the killing of Iranian Commander Qassem Soleimani.

"Both sides have expressed concern over the death of Commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force Qassem Soleimani in a US missile strike at the Baghdad airport," the Kremlin's press service said.

Both leaders warned that the strike could escalate the situation in the region.

On Friday morning, Iraqi television announced that commander of the Quds Force Qassem Soleimani and Deputy Chairman of the Popular Mobilization Forces Abu Mahdi Al Muhandis were killed in an airstrike that targeted their vehicles near Baghdad International Airport.
