The new central market at Al Sailiya - with advanced facilities of international standards for producers, traders and buyers - became functional Sunday, announced Aswaq for food facilities management.
Spread across 78,000sqm, the new central market is located around 25 minutes away from the heart of Doha.
“The market serves the needs of all by putting the latest facilities in place,” Mohamed Ghanim al-Kubisi, Aswaq general manager, told Gulf Times during a tour of the new market.

The market is divided into several connected and air-conditioned sections to serve the fruit and vegetable trade.
Al-Kubaisi explained that the market has an exclusive area with 52 shops for traditional goods. The market also includes 102 shops in the retail section while 50 shops function in the wholesale market.
An auction hall of over 8,000sqm is a special feature of the new market. Imported products will be auctioned in the hall from where traders can buy them and sell in the market.

In order to ensure proper preservation of vegetables and fruits, the market has nine cooled storage areas occupying 2,600sqm.
“The coolers, equipped with modern facilities, will help both importers and traders, store their goods,” al-Kubaisi said.
Aswaq has put together a well-established operations module for the auction hall to ensure a smooth and efficient operation.
The trucks bringing goods are registered in the designated parking and the data is crosschecked at the market entry point. Subsequently, the products are placed in the auction hall. Upon completion of the auction, the products are loaded either out of the market, to the wholesale market or to the cold storages.
