At least two people were killed in Louisiana, southern US, while more than 200,000 residents of three states were subjected to power outages due to hurricane Delta, which has been striking areas in the central Atlantic and northeastern United States for days.
Hurricane Delta made landfall in Louisiana as a category 2 hurricane on Friday, at a speed of about 150 kilometres per hour off the coast of Louisiana, which caused gusty winds and heavy rain.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said that with the passage of the hurricane in Louisiana, heavy rain fell in the southwestern part, explaining that it caused flooding and damage to power lines.
An 86-year-old man died in St. Martin Parish after a fire started as he was fueling a generator in a shed, and a 70-year-old woman died in Iberia Parish in a fire likely caused by a natural gas leak following damage from the storm, he added.
Meanwhile, large numbers of residents in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi woke up in the dark, more than 200,000 people remained without power states, according to the (CNN).
In Lilburn, Georgia, a train derailed after heavy rain overnight. Firefighters found the train on its side, with 38 cars derailed, some of them on fire.
Hurricane Delta was the 25th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. Five hurricanes have made landfall in the US this year, the most since 2005.
