Qatar University’s (QU) Department of Biomedical Sciences under the supervision of College of Health Sciences organised a breast cancer awareness event under the title: Early Detection Saves Lives.
Due to the current situation regarding Covid-19 and following the Ministry of Public Health policies and regulations the event was conducted through WebEx platform.
Guest speakers were May Osama from Qatar cancer society and Aya Hamdan, teaching assistant of Human Nutrition at College of Health Sciences QU. Students, faculties and other department and sector officials attended.
The speakers focused on awareness of breast cancer, which greatly increase a patient's chances of getting treatment, but this action must be taken in the early stages. Nutrition can play a role in a healthy diet in general, and may help prevent the development or progression of breast cancer.
Dr Amal al-Haidos, assistant professor of Biomedical Sciences at College of Health Sciences QU pointed out that the Department of Biomedical Sciences organise the breast cancer awareness event, every year during October, which is the breast cancer month. It is most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low-and middle-income countries, the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years.
Dr al-Haidos explained that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Qatar, but unfortunately, some does not have the enough knowledge about the disease symptoms and how important the early diagnosis for it.
"Once detected in its early stages the rate for survival from breast cancer is 99% which decreases to 27% if detected at a later, advanced stage," she added.
