BLURB/STRAP" Campaign comes within the framework of preparations for this year's turtle nesting season, based on a decision for the complete closure of the beach and to turn it into a special reserve for turtles and sea birds to protect turtles and seabirds from extinction.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Department of Protection and Wildlife, has launched a campaign to rehabilitate Fuwairit Beach in preparation for the 2021 turtle nesting season.
The campaign is being held in collaboration with the Natural Reserves Department, General Cleanliness Department, Mechanical Equipment Department, Public Relations Department and Al Shamal Municipality, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reports.
Talib Khalid al-Shahwani, director of the Department of Protection and Wildlife at the MME, said the initiative comes within the framework of the “exceptional preparations for this year's turtle nesting season, based on a decision for the complete closure of the beach and to turn it into a special reserve for turtles and sea birds to protect turtles and seabirds from extinction”.
It is also part of the ministry's keenness to provide a suitable environment for nesting of the endangered hawksbill sea turtle.
He pointed out that the inventory and monitoring operations of the turtle nesting process during the past years showed a remarkable increase in turtle nesting operations in the Fuwairit Beach area and the surrounding natural areas, QNA adds.
The campaign will continue until March 3, during which beach cleanup and waste removal operations will be carried out at the site. This will be in addition to removing the growth and extensions of mangroves, removing unwanted weeds and forest maintenance and cleaning. The beach will be completely cleaned by the end of the campaign.
