HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie has said Qatar's endeavour, through achieving its national vision and implementing its national food security strategy, to build an efficient, flexible and resilient food system to meet urgent challenges and risks by working to secure the food needs of the population of the State, in co-operation with the private sector with all its components, as a strategic partner in economic development projects.
In his speech on World Food Day, which falls on October 16 of each year to commemorate the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), HE Dr al-Subaie said that the celebration of day represents a very important opportunity in strengthening international and awareness-raising efforts aimed at improving food production systems and optimal use of natural resources to achieve food security and sustainable development, pointing out that the participation of Qatar in the celebration stems from its firm belief in the importance of the transition to sustainable food production systems.
The minister explained that within the framework of achieving the desired goals in food security, several strategic projects related to food security have been implemented to reduce the gap between supply and demand in the local market of various high-quality agricultural products by prioritising the goals of achieving the highest production rates following the best international standards and practices, focusing on the importance of preserving resources and shifting to sustainable food systems.
He pointed out that an appropriate and sufficient strategic stock of basic food commodities has been formed in the country, in co-operation with partners from the private sector, as well as work on developing internal and external food supply chains, and preparing and building facilities for food security warehouses in Hamad Port on an area of more 500,000sq m for storing food commodities.
He explained that these facilities also include buildings for the manufacture, transformation, and refining of some food commodities for local, regional and external use.
HE Dr al-Subaie pointed out that the challenges that the world faced during the previous period, represented by the economic repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic, had cast a shadow on the business establishments and jobs sector, as well as negatively affected the livelihoods of individuals, low levels of income in general, and the ability to access sufficient and appropriate food, which requires working more aggressively than ever to intensify international efforts for coordination and convergence in the field of policies and development plans for sustainable food production, in addition to making the necessary arrangements to protect and develop the use of natural resources to ensure their proper exploitation and employment.
He stressed that Qatar is looking forward to continuing technical and economic co-operation with the international community to reach the common goals in supporting the transition to more efficient, comprehensive, sustainable, and resilient agricultural and food systems to meet the food needs of all kinds.
