The Bangladesh embassy in Doha organised events to mark Shaheed Sheikh Russel Day 2021 on October 18, the birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
The events included the laying of a floral wreath at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, a discussion meeting, video screening on Shaheed Sheikh Russel and the Shaheed Sheikh Russel Smriti Badminton Tournament.
Md Jashim Uddin, ambassador of Bangladesh to Qatar, along with embassy officials and community members, laid a floral wreath at Shaheed Sheikh Russel’s portrait as a tribute to his memory. This was followed by discussions about Shaheed Sheikh Russel, while a video documentary was also screened.
The speakers highlighted the brutality of the killers who assassinated Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his family members, including the youngest son of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Russel, on August 15, 1975.
The ambassador said the assassination of a 11-year-old boy, Sheikh Russel, had revealed the ulterior motive of the killers who wanted to eliminate the core values upon which Bangladesh’s independence was founded. He added that the killers wanted to kill everyone who cherished the values.
A special prayer was held to seek salvation of the departed soul of Father of the Nation, his family members who received martyrdom on August 15, 1975, and martyred freedom fighters. A cake was cut to celebrate the birth anniversary of Shaheed Sheikh Russel.
In the evening, the ambassador attended the final matches of the Shaheed Sheikh Russel Smriti Badminton Tournament as chief guest, organised by the Bangladesh Badminton Society in Qatar under the patronage of the embassy of Bangladesh.
A total of 92 players, including female, played in the tournament in both the doubles and singles categories. All the players were given mugs with the Sheikh Russel Day logo printed on each of them on behalf of the embassy. The envoy presented 18 trophies to the champions and runners-up.
A good number of community members attended the events of Shaheed Sheikh Russel Day 2021.
