Vice-captain Mohamed Rizlan notched his maiden T20I half-century to fire hosts Qatar to a 98-run win over Maldives in the Asia Qualifier Group A for the 2022 ICC T20 Men’s World Cup at the Asian Town Stadium on Sunday.
Rizlan smashed three sixes and half a dozen fours to score 62 off 46 balls, which enabled the home team to post 154 for six in 20 overs. Qatar skipper Iqbal Hussain Choudhry (22 not out of 11 balls) and Mohamed Tanveer (20 off 22) also made useful contributions. Qatar, who lost the opener to Bahrain by eight wickets, shot Maldives out for 56.
Mohamed Nadeem and Choudhry were the wreckers in chief. Nadeem had excellent figures of 4 for 10, while Choudhry took 3 for 9.
In another match, Kuwaiti opener Ravija Sandaruwan forged a fine 78-run alliance with Adnan Idrees for the second wicket to bring high-flying Bahrain to the ground in a facile six-wicket triumph. Kuwait restricted Bahrain at 124 for 8 before chasing down the target in 11.3 overs for the important win.
